How high can you safely set the rpm on a cub?

Disconnect the governor like Ralph Napier did.

Can’t recall what he said it was turning.

1800 to 2000 without modifications to a factory built engine. But, the peak torque is right around 1600 rpms.

Curious, why did you ask the question?
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thanks, Eugene. We've recently turned ours down to about 1850. It was running near 2500 when I purchased it last year...and I did enjoy the power, or at least the perception of power. I've heard that it was ok to turn it up that high if I wanted to do so. The only reason would be to try and get a better cut when mowing heavy grass with the Woods RM42. Otherwise, I think it's just fine turned down. I understand the later cubs were set around 1800 and mine is a 1975 model.

You may have a governor from a stationary c60 engine in the cub. They ran at 2500 rpm.

The numbers cubs with the same engine ran 2200-2400.

The palmer boat engines ran higher without a governor.

" Safely" is relative. Factory setting for a farming c60 is 1800-2000 depending on the year. The torque does not increase only the RPM. All hp increase is from RPM

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

The governor on the 184 motor in my cub was topping out at 2800 as I didnt have it adjust correctly. Made driving in 3rd on the road fun. Since backed it down to where it should be.

Keep in mind that these aren't really the same engine. Later engines had aluminum pistons, which has some effect on speed limit. Bearings changed, probably had some effect on durability. The Palmer engines had a counterbalanced crankshaft, smoother operation and probably allowed higher revs. Keep in mind that the Palmer engine was expected to typically be used as an auxiliary, run for a few minutes at the start and end of the day. The tractor was expected to work at fairly full load 10 hours a day for years.

As stated, safely is relative. You want less than a 1% chance it turns itself into a grenade in 3 years? How about a 5% chance in 2 years? Want to go with a 50% chance in 6 months? Make your choice and take your chances!

I wouldn't go more than 3-400 over original spec for any version.

I have three stationary engines with steel pistons and 2500 rpm governors.

I do agree the Palmer was not the best example but everything after 1968 had aluminum pistons.
