Tractor #1 is home!!

Postby JohnL (BlackJeep) » Mon Nov 14, 2005 8:54 pm

Well, I brought her home over the weekend. This is my neighbor's Cub, purchased new in 1954 by his father. I bought it with the grader, double mold board plow and other unidentifiable implements for $1000. Was this a decent price? I never bought a tractor before.

I plan to restore it to near new over the winter. I've done cars and motorcycles before, this just sounded like more fun.

The problems:
1) Starts and runs smooth, but only when fully choked. When you open the choke it dies instantly. I pulled the carb and cleaned out the jets and loose crap (disintegrated gasket). Still the same results. Maybe a rebuild kit?

2) Hydraulics don't work. This was the problem my neighbor had with it just before he passed last spring. There's oil in the reservoir, but I'm not sure if it's enough or how to check. What to check for?

I found the Cub manual online, great stuff. But I haven't found anything about the hydraulic system. Does anyone have a link for this info?

I posted lot's of pictures on my site http://www.lappie.org

Thanks for all of your help, this is a great site.

John

Ya did good, John.

Your carburetor needs rebuilding, get the carburetor kit from IH. Clean out the tank and fuel line as well. Touch Control fluid level is the top of fill plug on upper left side (from the driver's seat) of the hydraulic block.

Looks to me that you got a great deal" I'll give you 1001.00 for it . I'm cheep. LOL  Seriously though, you did well. Your carb need's a serious cleening. that should take care of the running. The hdy, may be low on oil . to check it take off the square plug on the left {as if you were sitting behind the weel } and fill with oil. If it stops working after a few week and its low again then you need new "O" rings in your pump, Not a big deal good luck and keep in touch" Jack"

Those other "unidentifiable" implements are cultivators.

Tractor #1 Is Home

Postby Bob Dufort » Mon Nov 14, 2005 10:21 pm

Most likely the problem is in the carb, but since you already looked at it and you are conversant with motorcycle carbs, I would suggest checking the fuel flow from the tank. Remove the fuel feed at the carb and open the petcock, there should be real good flow. Keep us posted. --------- Bob

I had one that would only run when fully choked, even after a carb rebuild. The problem was that it was sucking air where the carb mounts to the manifold. Put a thicker gasket on and tightened the carb down real good and it ran fine. It may not work for you, but it's a cheap fix if it works.

I'd say you got a fantastic deal. Looks like it's been well taken of for a 50 year old tractor. Patience really pays off in this hobby. Some pluses I see. Complete set of wheel weights, has rear work light, and looks to be still 6volt. My guess is that the seat is original too. Great find!

How quickly do you think you can find #2 so you have something to work on? That one looks so great in what are probably original clothes it maybe shouldn't be restored... simply brightened up and protected. One that nice condition is very rare.

I'll join the others in congratulating you on a fabulous deal!

I'm with George. That tractor is worth more like it is than if you repaint it. I saw one go on ebay for 3 or 4 thousand dollars that had been untouched. I would clean it up and fix the small things and look at the beauitful patina of the oridginal paint.
