Farmall Cub

I just have a question about mufflers. If you look at the famous 501 cub picture it has a muffler similiar to most reproductions out there today. If you look at most early cub ad's and manuals they show a very small skinny diameter muffler, with something like a foot of pipe out of the hood. I just wondered if anyone knows exactly how long this tall pipe is supposed to be, and does anyone make the skinny early style mufflers. Or does anyone know where I can get an original. Vertical pipe from the manifold is 17" including the threads on one end. You can occasionally find an original muffler if you're lucky. I have one or two stashed away but they're mine - all mine!

BD Quite understand, would you be able to take a bit of time in that big dark barn where the gardian lives to dig one out and sebd us a photo over the wire? If you have 5 mins a sketch would be very acceptable to those of us who like tin bashing?

Say BigDog...One of those "Original" IH Cub Mufflers of yours wouldn't be one of the "RARE" short stack mufflers with the "improvised" newer stack added to it?

Well, I still have that one Country but my grandson plays with it all of the time. I don't count it as one of them even though most of it is.

Pat here is a picture that Arizona Mike posted a few days ago. It shows a couple of original mufflers that he has.

The mufflers I am talking about are way smaller than that. They are maybe 2 1/2 inches in diameter from the pictures.

If I am not mistaken the Cub takes the IH-1 muffler which is made by Stanley. The originals are NLA. And I have a feeling if BD measured those, they would be about 3-1/2 inches in diameter thereabouts.

If you look at the page below, you will see that Item #3 Part # 531 436 R92 is the replace ment for Part # 356 003 R91 which may have been the original.

And if I remember correctly the pipe is as BD mentioned either 17" or 18" of 1-1/4" ID or 1-3/8" OD Schedule 40 iron pipe. The Muffler easily fits on the 1-3/8 OD pipe, and judging by the increase in size to account for the baffling and stuff the diameter of the Muffler itself is around 3-1/2".

This is only an approximation as I was using an architect's scale and not a caliper...

I was looking at a photo that may be a pre production tractor. I will check it when I get home, but the mufflers are almost rounded off where the start at the bottom. They are not so Cylinder looking, more start out like a funnel. Thanks Brandon.

The exhaust pipes on my 48 and 49 are 1 inch black pipe. I think 1 1/4 was used on the later ones. Note, those are ID measurements.

Here's a photo of #501 in 1947. I think the muffler on it looks pretty much the same as the ones available today.

If you are interested in an original NOS muffler contact NOSIH he had 2 NOS mufflers still in the box at the IH Winter convention in Madison last winter. Guessing on his asking price he probably still has them. Steve

You can find him in the profiles and PM him or Email . I believe he was asking @ $100. If I was restoring a nice original tractor I would have been interested but none of mine are original. So the reproduction parts will work fine for me. TM tractor also had some reproduction mufflers you may be interested in check their web link on this site. Steve
