Is there a 6 volt trickle charger?

Postby Bob McCarty » Sun Nov 13, 2005 3:22 pm

To minimize winter battery problems, I thought I'd get a trickle charger, but haven't been able to locate one for 6 volt batteries. Checked Harbor Freight, Northern Tools, and a couple of local places. Or is there a way to connect two 6 volt batteries and use a 12 volt model? Thanks, Bob

Tractor Supply Co. has a 6 or 12 volt 2 Amp. for motorcycle batteries that will work. I think it is less than $25.
Best,
Mike

Bob, I think J.C. Whitney used to have them but I haven't checked in a long time. You could connect 3 - six volt batteries in series (negative of one to the positive of the second one) and then connect a 12 volt charger to the un-connected posts.

Northern has a 6/12 volt charger, 2 amps/6amps for $29.99.

I would think most auto parts stores, farm, tractor supply or stores that carry some auto parts would have them in stock or could readily obtain one for you.

My opinion. I would purchase a charger with both the 6 volt and 12 volt function.

Bob,

Here is the one I use and it came from Wal-mart a couple years ago. It's a 1 amp 6/12 trickle charger and if memory serves me I paid less than 20 bucks for it. It is made by Schumacher, they have been in business for many years.

What is also nice as you can see it has a regular spring clamps or one can hook it up permanent to your battery, then just unplug the connector and go.

I have 4 or 5 chargers, all have 6 and 12 volts, (one even has 8 volts) but this is the smallest in amperage.

If you get an automatic charger, your batteries won't be overcharging - the other way to kill a battery. WalMart carries automatic trickle chargers for about $12 but they are for 12V only.

I picked up a 6/12 volt fully automatic charger for sealed, regular and deep cycle batteries for $15 at Sears. It was a discontinued item on a reduced price table.

I just use my stnadard 6 volt charger with a plug in timer that turns it on for 15 minutes everyday. doesn't overcharge and keeps the battereis ready.

John, I have one similar to that too, I had my automatic on/off controller on an electric bug zapper. To be honest about the only time I put a charger on a battery is because of something STUPID I have done, LOL! I never think about sticking one on to keep the battery fully charged.

Anyhow I was just on the Sears website looking for something different but still battery related and I found one like what Carl was talking about (automatic that is) for $29.99 it's looks to be the same size as mine, but is automatic.

I think this may be what your looking for:

Northern sells this brand, but not this model. I don't know if they could order it. You can order direct from the company. Expenisive, but consider the cost of a good battery.

This one sells for less than $20 at Walmart. It's exactly the same as the one at Sears.

Yeah Don and probably more than likely, Schumacher makes them for Sears and sticks on the "DIEHARD" logo face.

The only time I do that is in the winter when it may set for extended periods, adn I want to make sure it has a full charge for cold weater starting to plow snow.
