As I recall, it controlled a pair of damper doors in the fan housing.

While you'all were discussing hard to find parts, I went to WalMart and purchased two 4ft Led shop lights 5000 Lm for $21,84 each.

Son brought over one of the Led shop lights. I installed it over the work bench in the house basement. What a difference. I was so impressed I purchased the last two described Led fixtures in the store.

i vaguely remember that bellows after seeing the picture . brought back some fond memories . my daughter (15 at the time ) and i rebuilt the engine on a '74 beetle , hoping to give her a little appreciation of how they work . the cool thing was the bug had a semi-automatic transmission . no clutch peddle . after my daughter ,my son drove it through high school . kinda wished i'd kept it . coppersmythe.......................................PS: it did control the doors to the cooling fan " duct " . our local VW guru , with a shop that looked like something out of an old cheech and chong movie , the typical hippie hold out ,helped us with the details and parts , along with the book , idiots guide to the VW beetle . a good read by the way . if i recollect , he recommended not installing it , given our climate here , he said it was primarily for heating the heat exchangers more quickly for cabin heat . boy , the things that come back from one photo .

Ok, not to totally hijack this thread about lights, but....this, .....is a VW. and yes it runs, and is mine, it has NO thermostat! it has dual exhaust it has a dump box on the back there, its up, and yes the loader works too. just had to throw this " VW" out there, 1600cc dual port engine

I found replacements for my 10 200 watt incandescent shop bulbs ,I replaced them with gt-ha-50 high lumen 50w/5000 led bulbs ,on sale with rebates at Menards. It was unbelievable the difference in brightness in the shop. Should have changed them out much earlier ,live and learn. Final cost $22.25 the best price I could find anywhere. Thanks for the advice.

Just read some reviews on the light you purchased from Walmart; some complained about it flickering. You'll have to let us know in the months ahead if you experience a similar issue. Hope not.

Installed 3 of the 5000 lumen fixtures over the frequently used basement work benches about 3 weeks ago. No problems so far. Plan on installing 3 of the fixtures over the work bench and welding area in the acreage shop.

So far no problems with flickering.

Part of one of the light strips stopped functioning in a fixture that I installed in the shop. Other light strip in the fixture works.

I bought the LED replacement bulbs for 4ft fixtures,. they worked great for a few days, now they hum, flicker and simply go off. I have 3 fixtures in a row all wired to one switch. all or one or any combo might be working or not.

You have a bad connection somewhere. Start at your panel and look closely at the neutral, then go to the switch. If some lazy person used the holes on the switch and just shoved the wires in, get a new switch and wire it properly. And while your in the switch, if the neutral passes through, check that connection. The go to the lights. I have also found a bad 50 amp breaker feeding a sub panel causing the led's to flicker. One time it was the neutral in the panel loose and one time a switch was wired with the worthless push in connections. These led lights are very sensitive to voltage and connection issues. Flourecsent and incandescent bulbs work fine with these issues many times. Just go through every connection, replace the switch or switches and if that all fails try a different breaker on the opposite leg in your panel.

I have just installed 4 of these in my garage and 2 over my basement workbench. They are outstanding. I liked the option to mount them flush to the ceiling without using the cable hangers. And no interference or humming at all.

I have been installing these a few at a time since my first post about them in February. My first 2 were installed in my basement where they are used several times a day. Since then I have been replacing my dimmer florescent tubes in the shop, some of which are around 20 years old. I have not had a single problem with them. I like these because they are a direct replacement with no rewiring required. As to the energy used by the ballast, while the ballast does use a small amount of energy for it's load is the main cause for the amount of energy it uses. I have not measured it, but the load with a string of LED bulbs would be much less than what it takes to fire the fluorescent tubes. Also, an old clumsy man that does not do well on ladders finds it much easier to just change a bulb than to stay on the ladder long enough to rewire a fixture3. It is much cheaper to replace a bulb at $8.88 per pair than to pay $30 for a complete fixture.
