Right side final bearing question
Here is something I haven’t noticed before, the bearings on my Lo-Boy have identical covers on each side.
Not having an F Cub before getting our ‘52 so I never noticed that the right side on those are open to the weather ??? Really?
The photo above is borrowed because it’s so close to one I took of mine it’s just easier to borrow this one.
Is there some kind of slip on cover that fell off or is it supposed to collect dust and crud like mine did?
I almost ordered a bearing cover for that side but it looks like it’s there, well sort of.
Mike

Re: Right side final bearing question
Nope! No cover. There is an o-ring seal just under that nut. The exposed shaft is where a sprocket would be mounted for a chain to drive the fertilizer/planter assemblies.

Thanks! Wouldn’t have guessed that.
You know, hardly a week goes by where I don’t learn one more little tidbit about these things.

Hi,
Below is a page from a Cub owner's manual showing the seed plate drive, IH called it.
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... age-53.jpg
There is an oil seal there in the retainer that seals it, dirt can't get into the final drive, if the seal is good.
The pic you posted is how it is supposed to look.
Below are pics from TM Tractor showing a sprocket that attaches to the seed plate drive.

Re: Right side final bearing question
Went on YouTube to look up maintenance and found this showing a Cub with a cap over that bearing. Apparently there is a cap available.
Mine has paint missing on the sides which would suggest a cap was in place when it was painted.

Re: Right side final bearing question
I believe I read here somewhere that the finals lower pans can be replaced without the paper gasket using RTV sealer like can be used with a automotive differential cover. The F Cub isn’t as easy to drain and refill the finals as it is for the Lo-Boy. I figure in that I have no way of knowing it was ever done it’s a no Brainer.
I know I’ve got to change the trans fluid for sure as the weep hole on the left side has that milky overflow. Yup water. been there before.
Incidentally the switch from the 6v coil to a 12v coil made a night and day difference in the way it runs. I put a volt meter on the battery today too. The amp meter in the dash has cracked glass with water inside and the needle is stuck on the discharge side. I wanted to check the health of the alternator so at rest it was 12.59v, running at idle 13.15v and half throttle 14.5v
Good! One less headache. Still this old gal is in much better shape than my Lo- Boy was.

Re: Right side final bearing question
If the right final has a regular cap over the axle nut, it probably was swapped out previously with a "left" final. Actually, the final housings are exactly the same, left and right. It's the axle that makes them different.

Re: Right side final bearing question
Hi,
There is no separate cap for the seal retainer shown in the Cub parts manual.
Below are the pages from the Cub parts manual showing the final drives. The retainer for the right side is the number 29 in the pic.
The cap for the left side is number 28.
http://www.farmallcub.info/manuals/cub_ ... 007-12.jpg
The 1st 29 in the description below is for the Farmall Cub.

I think I have seen a How To on here of someone making a cap for the Farmall Cub Seed Plate Drive.

Re: Right side final bearing question
I have never had the final on a low boy apart, but in a standard cub right final that open cap also has a seal inside it.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: Right side final bearing question
That nut was pretty gunked up. I’ll forget about finding a cap they didn’t make, replace the fluid in the drive and watch to see if that seal is leaking.
