Re: Needing to improve the traction on my Cub and a non-snow question
I needed some extra weight in a pinch. We have some half moon shape wheel weights. I bolted it to the drawbar and it worked great.

As for weight that is easy to remove, perhaps use a carry all and load it up with bags of sand or salt. If you are really set on suitcase weights, perhaps modify something like this to fit your tractor.

I can't find the picture now, but someone had built a homemade 3-point trailer mover starting with a couple of large eye bolts on the drawbar. Perhaps a couple of eye bolts can get the above trailer mover mounted so that you can hang the suitcase weights.

Re: Needing to improve the traction on my Cub and a non-snow question
Ordered my chains today, ended up calling and they had ladder and twin ladder which just had more cross links. Guy I spoke with said twin ladder are awesome so that is what I went with. Was asking about chain life etc. He said he couldn't quote because it all depended how far and fast I drove. Said a lot of highway driving will wear them down especially if the highway has no snow. Told him well fastest I'll be going is 2-3mph maybe 4 if I'm feeling crazy in 2nd gear, said its for a Farmall cub. He was like OH yeah they'll definitely last, LOL. Will be here Friday and they are calling for more snow here Monday so maybe get to check them out.
I have access to suitcase weights as my brothers father-in-law does tractor pulls and isn't using them during the winter. Just have to come up with a way to mount them.

You made a great choice getting the twin ladder chains. As I said earlier, I added additional cross links and the improvement in traction was amazing.

QUestion does adding extra weight to the drawbar or weights attached to the finals somehow lead to possible damage of the finals? Was searching posts and saw one person claim this.

Re: Needing to improve the traction on my Cub and a non-snow question
I don't know about the broken finals, seems like most people attributed it to loose bolts. It looks like Ricky Racer has a good size load on his draw-bar during the winter months. I wouldn't think 300-400 lbs would damage anything. I'm not sure if there is a specification for max draw-bar or trailer tongue weight.

I would not exceed the rated capacity of the drawbar. Naturally, the best place to carry weight is on the wheels. That takes all of the weight off of the tractors structure.

Re: Needing to improve the traction on my Cub and a non-snow question
For extra weight I have a trailer hitch cut down and bolted to the drawbar. Bout as simple as can be. I slide a carryall in it and put what ever is handy on it. Also used a ratchet strap hooked to both back corners and looped around the lift arm for stability and takes strain off the drawbar and finals. I can put enough weight in it to lighten up the front with little strain on the finals with the ratchet straps.

Re: Needing to improve the traction on my Cub and a non-snow question
The Fast-Hitch for a Cub weights about 200#, most of which is carried by the final drive housings. A one-point platform carrier weighs about 70 and is rated (on a Farmall Cub) for 350#, all carried on the hitch and well behind the attachment points on the final drive housings. That all adds up to about 620#, carried far back. IH evidently thought that weight was OK. Note that the Owner's Manual for the carrier may have said something about maximum wheel spacing as spacing can affect the forces on the housing.
The same carrier on a Lo-Boy is only rated for 175#. That is probably more for keeping the front end on the ground than for concern over the housings.
I have plowed snow with 2 wheel weights strapped to a platform carrier. It helps a lot.

I can attest that the fast hitch weights every ounce of that 200 lbs. Mine seem to weight more like a ton.
