A weights on a Cub

Postby Lt.Mike » Thu Dec 20, 2018 10:25 am

Saw this on CL. These appear to be wheel weights for an A. Guessing not a perfect fit but I didn’t know they’d bolt up.
A rear weights usually go for a little less than Cub weights so I guess they’ll do in a pinch.

I had assumed they were the same, but you know what they say about assumptions...

Ok I'm sure my back will complain later but I weighed them up. The ad made me curious so I might as well do the grunt work for bringing it up.
Th Cub rear weights are 136.4 lb.s, the A rear weights are 126.6 lb.s, and while I was at it the Cub front weights are 24.4 lb.s each. Either A or Cub weights on their proper centers sit flush as they do Cub on Cub weight or A on A weight. You cant slide a paper between them. Th e Cub's center is much flatter that the A's. If you set an A on a Cub center or weight you can reach inside and fit your fingers between them.
The holes do line up but I can see some added strain on the bolts that hold an A weight to a Cubs center and it'd be probable the weight would shift from being centered on the disk.
I'll add one other thing, an A rim will not bolt up to a Cub center though they are both 24".
I was selling an A rim once and gave it a try for an interested buyer and was glad I did because we both assumed because they were both 24" they were the same. Nope not even close. I'd hate to have had the guy make a 3hr round trip to buy a rim he couldn't use.

A on left, Cub on right.

All I know is my Cub was worthless without rear weights.
The rear weights should be standard and not cheaper than front weights.

Simple supply and demand economics. More rear weights were produced than front weights. At your next Cub gathering look at the number of Cubs with only rear weights (my guess 75% plus) and how many have front weights (maybe a third). Front weights can be found cheaper if you get outside the Cub and Cadet community to buy them. It is also possible to find rear weights for much higher prices from someone outside the same group, so it works both ways. The demand (and price) is stabilized by the community being such a wide sampling instead of an individual transaction with little or no outside comparison.

Ya you can find the front weights if you search for weights on line. I got 3 sets of fronts for $225 from a cadet guy in Connecticut

That was a good deal. I see them pop up from time to time but you’ve got to move fast on them because there’s more than a few of us ready to swoop on them.

Another interesting fact the non engine side of a Super A the red center part of the rear wheel is thick cast iron while the other side is stamped steel.

I have both tractors and I have already found 2 dozen things that are "cheaper that way" on the Cubs.

I’ll tell you what, after weighing them my back would argue they both weighed 100lb.s more than the scale read! :surrender:

Im sure a B weighs more than a Cub, so you would think that the Cub would need heavier weights?

The A, B, 100 - 140 also has something that the Cub doesn’t have, a weighted center on the right side. I haven’t weighed it and don’t really relish the idea of weighing it right now but I’d guess that center weighs every bit as much as the wheel weight does.
I have two weighted centers on my A and it really helps.
Another note, if I were to tow my boat or camper with the Cub without weights mounted the tires will not grab traction and spin tearing up the lawn. With weights it does no harm.
