Remove transmission cover

Postby Mrblanche » Mon Nov 05, 2018 1:36 pm

It's probably easy, and I'm just making it hard, but I don't want to force anything.

Is there a trick to remove the transmission cover/shift lever. I have the bolts out, the transmission in neutral, but it still feels like there's something holding it on.

Probably gasket sealer. Stick a screwdriver under it and pry it off.

If it's really stuck, you do run the risk of bending it if you pry only in one spot. I would recommend trying to get a putty knife driven into all four corners and working it off. There aren't any hidden fasteners though.

Thanks. I've been using my "special pry putty knife thingy" all around it, but I wanted to be sure I didn't have to perform any special incantations over the shifter or something like that.

Yep, no special spells required. A few curse words won't hurt though.

Got it off. I had somehow (and I guess we can begin to blame age and attention span) overlooked one bolt. OK, it was at a funny angle to where I was standing, and someone had camouflaged it with rust identical to the rust around it, but still...

Not sure I'm glad I got it off. The transmission seems to be working fine, but the 1st/rev fork was welded onto the shaft.

If it’s working fine, I’d just leave it be. Drain, flush and fill with 3.5 PINTS of gear oil.
