Bushing Removal Tip

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Wed Oct 31, 2018 12:37 pm

This is something I ran across that looks very handy. Wanted to share it with you guys here. It would be useful for many bushing removals that are in a closed/blind hole such as the steering gear box, clutch pilot bushing, etc. Post back if you've tried it and let us know how well it works or if it doesn't.

that works good on a thin bushing, but on a thicker bushing such as the clutch pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft I have found that it a die that will barely make threads screwed into it untill that it bottoms, and keep turning will push it out easily. Once it is out the bushing will loosen on the die and be easy to unscrew from it.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

That is a good thought John. I forgot about those being so thick. I've used the die method recently and it worked well. The key is to keep going until it bottoms out. in my case, mine broke loose before bottoming out and I used a chisel to get the rest.

Doesn't that guy know enough to simply sharpen an old punch rather than throw it away?

As far as his modified tool goes, that is what diamond point chisels are made for!

I have a "bushing peeler" chisel that works far better than his punch. I have no idea where I got it from, it's been in my tool box for years. It may be that the guy at the transmission shop got it for me.

For the thicker pilot bushings I prefer the method of packing grease in the hole and putting a reasonably well fitting piece of round stock (the tolerance should be real close) in the bushing and drive it out hydraulically with the hammer. If the round stock bottoms out add more grease until the bushing is out. The round stock pushes on the grease which forces the bushing out. You may want to cover your work with a rag in case some grease wants to squirt out. May need to repeat a couple times. I have had good luck with that. Sometimes a socket extension works well for the round stock. Wipe out grease and install new bushing. It works slick.

Very good to know. I've never heard of such a tool. I'll have to check that out and get me one!

I called it a bushing peeler but if you search "bushing cutter chisel" you can find them.
