I have read that the available oil seals will not fit the original rear oil seal retainer without some modification. What exactly needs to be done to the retainer to allow the seals to fit? I have access to a machinist and am in the process of rebuilding my engine. Can anyone recommend which seal to purchase?

Matt,

There has been a lot of discussion and several methods of remanufacturing the rear oil seal retainers, etc. Tim (tst) has this figured out.

Re: Rear oil seal
Hi,
You didn't say what year Cub you have.
They have said on here that the new oil seal available nowadays fits too loose in the older oil seal retainers.
If you are taking the tractor apart, you could try putting the new seal in the retainer you have.
The seal should fit tight in the retainer, not be loose, and need to be driven in. Use a clean, flat piece of steel, or similar, to set on the new seal, to hammer on. Don't hammer directly on a new seal.
Be sure the seal lip is facing ahead.
If the seal is loose in the retainer, so you can push it in with your fingers, then many of the people on here buy a repaired retainer, with seal, from tst, like was shown in the post above. Send him a private message, you get to that at the top of the page. tst, small letters, is the name for the message.
If the new seal fits too loose in your retainer, and if you want to fix your retainer so it works, the hole for the oil seal needs to be bored out to a certain size, which I don't know, I think it has been in other posts on here. Then a seal with a larger OD than the Case IH seal put in. That is what tst does with them, I believe.
Below is a new retainer at TM Tractor you can look at, if you have not seen a retainer before.

Below is a listing for the new oil seal.

Tighten the rear 3 bolts for the oil pan gently, the retainer is soft metal, and the threads can strip if the bolts are tightened too much.

Re: Rear oil seal
Thank you for the responses. The tractor is a 1955 Cub. I am looking for a part number or size of the larger seal. I have a machinist available to me at my job, and was hoping to have him do the work. I will reach out to tst and see if he can assist.

Re: Rear oil seal
Try a search for posting by tst on this subject. You will probably find the seal number. but for a bit over $50 (exchange) you can get one shipped to your mailbox, ready to install. IMO, Tim has pretty much perfected the upgrade. He's in upstate NY.

Re: Rear oil seal
I just did a engine over haul on my 51 cub and the new one was just a little loose so I put a light bead of head gasket sealer around the inside edge and let it sit for 24 hours and have not had a problem and that has been over a month.
