My '64 came with the cable disconnected and I finally got around to removing everything. 4-5 teeth on the drive gear are missing. The shaft in the cable turns freely, but when I removed it, there doesn't appear to be any lubricant on it. Suggestions?
Thanks, Bob

Graphite cable lubricant. Should be available at auto parts stores.

I agree with Eugene. That way any type of oil won’t run out of it and make a mess or collect dust.

Years ago when cars had speedo cables we used white lube.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Re: Best lubricant for tach cable
A motorcycle shop could possibly give you a suggestion, as those kinds of cables are prevalent on bikes. And they carry some in containers that facilitate lubing cables that are still mated together.
