Engine rebuild

Postby Jlpb61 » Mon Oct 08, 2018 1:19 pm

Help
In the try state area ( Oh. In. Ky.) Who rebuilds cub engines? What should I expect to pay? What is the difference between in frame / out frame? And you can laugh about this. Is this something I can do? Anything else I should be asking?
Thanks

So many questions....
In frame=block still attached to the rest of the tractor
Out of frame=block disconnected from the rest of the tractor
In the Louisville area...Auburndale, haas, and even the dealer jacobi’s.
How much-$300-500 to rering even doing it yourself. If you have a total basket case that needs boring, pistons, crank grinding you’ll have a grand in it before you get good and started

Machine shop numbers have generally been ‘cheap’. $3/valve, $20/cylinder to bore, $5to fit wrist pins,$100 to grind a crank. On a cub, you just rang up $225 without batting an eye...on to mains, rods, piston set with rings, gaskets...$400 to $500 more...and not one dime yet for labor. I wouldn’t touch a full rebuild for less than 20 hours...so I could see$2000 as a budget if you do drop off and pick up...

IMO, the best way to get accurate measurements to determine the wear and thus the extent of the rebuild is to disassemble the engine and measure (or get a machine shop to measure) the critical areas and then determine what the cost will be. A good place to start is the GSS service manual on engine rebuild and specifications available at the Quick Links tab/pdf manuals folder at the top left corner of this page.

Yes if you have the measuring and other tools to prep the engine for the overhaul, space/shop, shop equiment, and experience.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association (AERA). https://www.aera.org/ has a member locator page https://www.aera.org/member-locator.html

I used it to find a rebuilder to machine a head. I was very happy with with the price the results.

A few years ago I had a broken crankshaft, plus a broken block at the cooling connection to the bolster. Someon here suggested buying a recondition block from Stiener, thats what i did. Cost me a little over 1k but it made things easy and cheaper.

Thanks guys
Not sure what to do. It smokes has low compression. No leaks. As for power this is first cub I have owned
So I am not sure what kind of power to expect. I did discover that the throttle was not openning all the way. Needed two mounting gaskets. Just figured that out tonight. Have not tried mowing again. This thing is a blast to drive. Would like to push snow in the winter. If I find a blade.

What is the oil pressure at low and high rpm when the engine is warmed up after running 15 to 30 minutes? Do a full tune up to include a compression test and valve adjustment. This will give you a reasonable idea of the condition of the engine and you can make an educated guess as to what the 10 hp of this tractor will do.

1 more thing
Screw on the zenith carburator doesn't seem to do anything. In or out. What is that all about?

I'm doing a total rebuild as we speak. Not doing valves and I have a good crank so no machining there.

So engine bored, pistons, rings, gaskets, rod and main bearings. Looking at 600.

If crank needed turned and doing valves could add at least 300 to it. I'm in Arkansas.
