A Woods 59 works well on a Cub

Hey Barnyard, l've never understood the problems others seem to have with the Woods mowers and Cubs.
24 yrs ago l put a Woods 59c3 on my '48, which had been a farming tractor up until then, and have been mowing my 5 acres with it ever since. At least every 10 days or so from April to Oct. The only time l have any problems is if l let the grass get too long (8-10"), then it will bogg down.
One thing that l've been meaning to post but haven't is a reccomendation for those with problems. I have found that when you first start mowing, use WOT, but stay in 1st gear for the first 15 min. or so until the engine is at optimal operating temp. Then you can shift into 2nd and do the rest of your mowing.
It takes me about 3 1/2 hrs for 5 acres, hills are not a problem either unless as mentioned the grass is too long.

Great video, and it looks like it was doing a good job. But I watched each close pass, because to me it looks like the angle of the spindles indicates that the front of the blade is higher than the rear. I don't have a 59" mower, but with all others you typically set them up to be lower in the front. If yours really is higher in the front, it would cut even better if set up at the correct angle. Is that possible with the 59" mower? Or am I seeing some optical illusion that makes it look higher in the front?

Rick, you are seeing it correctly. That was a test run. I need to raise the rear since I already had the front down as far as it would go and it was almost scalping the grass.

great vid Bill----I have never run a cub with a 59 on it but I can vouch for the 42's cutting tall grass and weeds--anyway thanks for keeping my campsite cleared---to me it looks like you are just mowing a golf course

Great video reminds me of my old telco days,two supervisors getting in the way of the guy working I mow my yard approx 2 acres, with a Woods also. Cub is tired too,meaning engine has never been opened up other than valve adjustments. My key is to never take a full cut,I make one pass obviously to start then the next passes I take a half the deck cut. This does three things, only one side of the tractors front and mowers wheel push down the uncut grass and the other side of the mower is lifting and cutting what you pushed down on that last pass. Your also not working the tractor as hard through a full cut of tall grass,I never run full throttle,just a notch or two from full.Finished job is as good as a golf course. If you let it get away from you,it then does not matter how you do it! Normally by the middle to end of July my yard turns a nice even brown but this year has been tough,I need to do it twice a week to be able to keep up. Keep blades sharp is obvious too,I just bought some Oregon's on ebay to try at a good price,about half the price of genuine Woods,and are very happy with them. Went to get some more but could not find them at that price again. I do have some of the "back 40" I keep cut but it this year it got horribly away from me so the Ford will be needed to get that in shape first.

Heck yes!

Given the choice , whenever I run a side discharge I winnow cut material away from next pass.
My 42 don't allow such luxury , though and so gets to do double chewing duty with the brush hog blades on the edge of passes.

I do the same. I run 6in pulley but about to switch to 7.5. I don't mow tall grass or hills but my 48 does great. Recently got a 65 and may switch to that one now. Not sure yet.
