I bought one of the Denso 12180 35 AMP Mini alternators. Searching through posts I found one reference to 1/2”X21” for the belt size for this alternator installed on a Cub. (Gates 4L215). Before I go out and buy one, can someone confirm that this is what I need?
Thanks

Re: Belt for mini alternator
Hi,
Sometimes fitting a belt for conversions is not as easy as just buying one belt.
The belt should be a length so the alternator is near the inner end of the bracket adjustment slot, so it can be tightened, as it stretches over time.
Sometimes I have needed to buy 2 or 3 belts, and try them on, to get the best fit, for length.
Then I only need to make one trip to the store to buy them.
The auto parts store where I buy things lets me buy 2 or 3 belts at a time, and return the ones I don't use, after trying them on, to get the best fit.
If you have a store where you buy things, and they know you some, you could ask them if they will let you do that.

Re: Belt for mini alternator
Thanks Glen. That’s definitely a good idea. I’m hoping someone who is installed it can tell me what has worked for them. Shane Nelson posted some photos of this alternator installed on a Cub and I can see, but can’t read, the numbers on the belt. I was going to send him a PM, since he has experience with this set up, but figured I would try the forum first.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

The last one I did on a Cub I was able to use a 6819 on it but seems like another one had to be a tad longer. You may have to try as Glen suggested so your not running back and forth.

For what it's worth I Googled "formula for calculating v-belt length" and found a formula at https://www.ozarkindustrial.com/content/formula-find-belt-or-chain-length
D + d x 1.57 + 2x cd = belt length
Explanation
Add diameter of big pulley or sheave or sprocket plus diameter of small pulley or sheave or sprocket, take this number times 1.57 (This gives you the extra for the wrap). Measure from center of one shaft to the center of the other shaft,
then double it. Now take you wrap and add it the the doubled center distance and you have you belt length.
Note that if you are using pitch diameters on a v-belt sheave you will need to use the pitch diameter on your v-belt.
When using this for figuring a chain length, if you will need to use the pitch diameter of the sprocket for the most precise measurement.
Example
10" driven sheave
5" drive sheave
24"center distance
10+5=15
15x1.57=23.55
24x2 =48
48+23.55=71.55
or 10+5x1.57+24x2=71.55
Belt length is 71.55"
D + d x 1.57 + 2x cd = belt length

Re: Belt for mini alternator
Thanks for the replies. Looks like I need something in the 19”-21” range. Years ago I had a summer job for a company named Durkee-Atwood in Minneapolis that manufactured belts. Not sure what became of them or if the name is still out there on any of the products. They probably got bought out by Gates. I only mention it because I haven’t thought about that job in years, until I’m looking to buy a v-belt.

Re: Belt for mini alternator
They sell a “link belt”. That you can take links out (or add) to adjust length - have had one running for several years on one of my tractors,, Thinking it can be bought in lengths to make more than one,.? Dusty B

Re: Belt for mini alternator
Link belts can be convenient but I've always felt like the might wear on the pulley because they're sort of hard/sharp sided.
I just take a thick rope and wrap it then mark across the ropes and that's my measurement.
