I really like to break the garden in the fall, disk it, and then sow it in wheat and/or annual rye grass. In the spring, I mow the cover crop and break the ground again. The cover crop adds a great deal of organic matter to the soil and helps it retain moisture. Every other year, I use a single shank subsoiler behind a larger tractor to rip the ground. I do this both directions about 18 inches apart. I am very happy with the results I get this way.
