Cub-1 Platform Carrier Restore

Postby Slim140 » Wed Jul 11, 2018 11:29 am

I made one of these platform carriers on a scaled down version a while back with intentions of making the real thing one day. I bought a Cub package deal a few weeks ago and this came with it.

You can see the one I made in the next to last photo. The man at powdercoat told me to get the paint and rust off and he would make it red. He burnt it off in his oven for me then I wire brushed it with an angle grinder.

I was going to put all stainless steel bolts back in it until I cleaned these off and seen IH on the heads. I'm gonna have this whole thing powdercoated and see what they look like afterwards.

Shane do the parts get painted with a primer before powdercoat, or do they just powdercoat the bare metal?

They will prime them if I ask them too. This stuff is so durable it really isn't needed.

This shiny red makes the tractor look bad. Got boards today, 1-1”x6” & 2-2”x8” got to get them dried out. Also picked up stainless carriage bolts.

Shane, you probably know this, but if that's wet treated wood, it'll twist and warp. Best to bolt it down and let it dry on the platform carrier.

Bob, 2 of the 3 boards were pretty dry already. I laid all 3 of them in the shed and I been flipping them over about every 6 hours hoping they don’t warp and twist to bad. I thought about bolting them on but with only 2 bolts in each one I was scared they would bow up. Hopefully flipping them will help and I can cut them in a couple days and get them on. My wife is out of town also and I’m here with both our kids and I realize now what she does around here, whew.

If you have some C Clamps (and I'll bet you do) you could cut them to length, then fasten them to the frame or a couple of scraps so they could be propped up at an angle and get air exposure to both sides. (That would take some more time which sounds like is a premium commodity right now.) :) :hattip:

Took me all day with the kids and running our convenient store but I got it done. Now I need to order some decals from tst. I bought 10’ boards and cut them 56” long instead of the recommended 48”. That gave me 2 pieces about a foot long for the standards on the back.
