Making Rust into Gold !

Postby Ole90633 » Sat Jun 23, 2018 6:51 pm

Perhaps you fellas remember my starting into a pile of rusted Universal Mounting Frame, front & rear Tool Bars, Spring Tooth Cultivators...

image.jpeg

That's after much "blue wrench", "mouse milk" and sweat equity ! Carted the iron, excepting the Latch Handles for the 189 Plow Set, off for sand blast and powder coat...

image.jpeg

Reviewed a book of color chips and found real close matches to some remaining paint under clamped areas: Red #3003 and Blue #5005. Turns out, the powder was an exceptional match to the True Value dark blue in another topic. The CUB 22 Sicklebar Mower I had painted with that dark blue, placed alongside, was indistinguishable.

I'm real happy with both the red & blue colors on this working machine. Got a bunch of Cotter Pins; fender washers (inch and a half & two inch O.D., which I will machine the I.D. to fit the U.M.F. and Tool Bars); square and machine head bolts-nuts, on the way from Fastenal.

I'm getting started on the two short-shank, four long- shank cultivator Spring Teeth; all six shovels had both points worn down almost to the springs ! As expected, the "hot wrench" is involved and from a previous post I made "... need help with homework", there is evidence of black paint on the shanks !

Interestingly, took me about as long to downsize these pictures as it did to take all the iron apart

Is it just me or do you all love the beauty of old iron too ?

Looking very good! The powder coat is a terrific option for the cultivator tools and UMF since it will see considerable more wear than paint on a tractor.

May I ask what the 2 long bent bars are in the first picture above (on the right side)?

Those appear to be the 189 plow latching handles.

AL Farmall Boy, Cubfriend and Bob McCarty got the identity spot-on !

They are the Latch Handles for the 189 Plow Set, which I also rescued from the collapsed corn crib years ago. I was just getting a bunch of iron ready to go to the blast & powder coat shop; saw them nearby and threw them in the lot. Later, looking them over while loading the pickup, they seemed to have some unusual, extra bends ?

Pulled the Handles out of the mix until I could straighten, test fit them, make sure they were right; instead, put the two Swivels from the Rear Lifting Bar in their place.

Fastenal put together a nice bag of Cotter Pins and Fender Washers per my order, for the UMF & Tool Bars ! As the Q 121 and Q 3481 washers for those pieces are not available, the 16 ga. fender washers in 1 1/2", 2" O.D., will get the I.D. turned out to replace them. Little lathe work on the coming rainy day !

I've taken pictures of the Spring Teeth, Front & Rear, "as is" and then all broken-down; I've always enjoyed those "before" & "after" pictures... as I'm sure you all do too :{_}: I'll see how well I learned to downsize pictures for posting them later

Ok... coffee cup is empty, better get goin' !

The unusual extra bends may be there from the factory. Try to find someone else that has a 189 plow set and compare them. It would be ashame to straighten them just to find out you have to put the bends back in them so they will work. They have to go around some obstacles to get to the latches. Good Luck!

Well... this old dog is getting better at new tricks !

Here's that picture of the Spring Tooth Cultivator Set, all disassembled, as promised; I forgot to put the remaining pair of Springs in the picture ! Yup, do have six total pair :)

It'll go to the sand blast & powder coat shop Monday; gloss or semi-gloss black.
