Fabbing a FH drive shaft PTO splined yoke

Postby mva1958 » Wed May 30, 2018 3:52 pm

I've got a Mott FH mower with a ruined PTO splined yoke - I've got a WTB up in The Vine, but I'm wondering how hard it would be to make one.

What do you think of welding a yoke onto a 10-spline pulley, like a sickle-bar mower pulley? I realize that the yoke would have to be welded on dead center to avoid balance issues, but could a professional shop be expected to do that?

Alternatively, it might be easier to come across a similar splined yoke for a Woods B42F/B42L mower - would that work assuming I can find one? The Mott yoke clamps on and is held by a cotter pin while the Woods (I think) just slips on the shaft, also held in place by a cotter pin. I really don't want to have to look for another mower and the field is getting high...

if you look at agri supply they sell pto shafts, you can probably find one for the right length and get the spline adapter to fit the cub

I thought about that but I can't find a source for the Hub City splined adapter - they used to be all over ebay. Probably need to do some more googling.

Tim

what about the higher RPM of the Cub?
Do you think the off the shelf PTOs for 540 RPM can handle the higher RPM of the the Cub PTO?

Do you mean that can the shaft can take it? I run 100 HP tractors with mowers and balers that will get jammed at times and never hurt a shaft, I cannot imagine a cub would have the power to hurt one

The rpm is on the cub PTO is what 1700 rpm and those shafts were designed to run at 540 rpm. I am just wondering if u think that may be a problem.

I think inairam is meaning if it’s balanced precisely enough for the higher rpm?? I feel that it’d probably be fine but I have zero experience in pro shafts and what not

I think Tim is talking about those 1 3/8" 6 spline sleeves that fit over the cub PTO shaft, not a PTO extension.

I cannot see that being an issue, used one years ago for a flail mower, never heard back a problem

That yoke has a quick-release connection that I'm not sure would work. I thought I could order one through NAPA and test it, but NAPA says they can't get it. Matt has ordered one so we'll see what he comes up with; in the meantime I'm exploring all options.

I found a NOS yoke for a Woods B42F driveshaft, $35 bucks plus shipping. I'll take a chance that I can make it work and if not I'll pass it on.

The Woods mower uses the same Weasler 6 Series PTO components as the Mott mower, so it should fit right on. I've had both mowers at different times.

The parts are the same for 540 and 1700 RPM. If it was a problem, Dave wouldn't be here to post about it, LOL.

Per Fedex tracking, the yoke I ordered from PaulB Parts should be delivered today. I know it will fit the PTO shaft, but I'm not sure if it will secure to the shaft as-is. In order to use it you may need to modify the yoke, or modify the Cub PTO shaft.
