Fan Pulley Help and... Thanks Rondell!!

Postby ScottyG » Tue Oct 25, 2005 7:18 pm

First of all, I'd sincerely like to thank Rondell for taking the time to drop off his flywheel/pulley puller. This site never ceases to amaze me with all of the kind generous people it has to offer.

Well, as luck would have it, the puller did the job but a little too well as the bell of my pulley snapped in two. Question 1 is now what do I do? I'm assuming that I'll have to grind off the pulley and knock it apart but is there another way? Obviously, it's shot so, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't think I want to hammer it for fear of bending the crank or something but right now, I'm sunk.

Question 2 where can I get a replacement?

I would take it to a good welding/machine shop and let them take a look at it. Probalby wled a plate to the pulley hub and try again, unless you have a large enough welder to do it, or cna weld the bell back to the hub youself and try to pull it again. either way you need a new pulley.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

 Maybe you can use a smaller puller or the same puller? that will grab closer to the shaft and try again to pull the remainder off.
Then came Bronson

Scotty, I feel terrible that you broke your pulley!!! If you can wait till im back in town I'll help you get it the rest of the way apart.
You should be able to find a replacement easily enough...either ebay or one of our sponsors.
Will talk to you later

Rondell,

Not your fault or your problem really but, thanks. I wasn't being diligent enought by watching where the puller was seated and it rode up too far on the flange. Live and learn I think. Anyhow, I'm going to try with another puller that we have in house. This thing ain't budging at the moment. A little heat maybe since the pulley is shot??

Scotty, I would definately try some heat. You have to replace the seal anyway and that is about all that can be hurt by it.

Rondell and all,

Had to borrow the hydraulic puller from work. The thing's a beast and we usually use it to pull impellers out of pumps but it worked like a charm. One relief adds to another problem. Cracks in the casting. Been there for some time. I'll post on this in another thread.

Thanks again Rondell. Lemme know when you'll be by next so I can give you back your puller.
