Determining System Voltage

Postby Bob Grieb » Tue Oct 25, 2005 10:36 am

I recently purchased a 1947 Cub (S/N 4003) that has a 12 volt battery installed. I think it was put into the system just to start it with a readily available battery. I think the starter, generator, lights, etc. are the original 6 volt units. Is there a way I can check the system components to verify their voltage requirement.

voltage

If you have a mag, it doesn't care what kind of battery you have. It makes it's own juice. Starter reallty doesn't matter either. I have changed over several by having the generator redone. The light bulbs should say on the base what voltage they are. The starter isn't used enough to damage it. it will last quite a while with 12 volts going to it. I always leave the 6 volt starter on. They really start quick that way. You can start it and check the generator with a volt meter. Mike

Bob:

Check what number the bulbs are. If they are 1133 then they are 6 volt. If they are 1157 then they are 12 volt.

Also, check the battery... see how many cells and check the make/model number. Easily searchable on line.

Also, you can use an ohm meter to check output and that should tell you alos.

Oh another quick check, it if is negative ground if may possibly be 12 v, if it sis positive ground, then it would be pretty much 6 volt.

Big Dog and John and Jim are much better with the electrical stuff....

It is a negative ground system and I know it is a 12 volt battery. I will check the bulbs. I think the previous owner just put a 12 volt battery in it to start it when I showed up to buy it.

Thanks for the response - Rudi

You can check the tag on the generator and find out whether it is 6 or 12 volt by using the Delco-Remy number.
