Now wouldn't that be slick..........a Cub that changes from IH Red to Demonstrator White depending on how the light hits it. Don't know if that paint will work on rough cast surfaces..........but the effect might be even better! Thanks urbish.

OK, back to the original question. Here are 3 pictures of the same parts. Some are NOS or barely used parts with original paint others are repainted with Van Sickle 460 International Blue. I also threw in the square piece which was painted with Rust-Oleum Royal Blue.

The first picture was outdoors on a pretty sunny day.

Here are the same parts inside. The cultivator they are resting on was repainted quite a few years back with Van Sickle 460 and has been exposed to some outside weather. The room lighting is fairly bright LEDs.

Once more, same parts and placement but with the camera flash on. (I think I got the flash on/off right!) Notice how much the colors changed with the flash.

Anybody want to take a guess at which parts are repaints and which are original?

Hi Jim

Ok....here goes. Going left to right in the first pic.....and not counting the nut (because I can't see it that clearly) I'd say repaint, repaint, original, repaint, original and repaint.

How did I do?

This IH Blue really is an odd color.

Bob

Not the best natural light but here's a sample of the Craftsman paint I posted on page 2.

Radio,

I went digging online for that Craftsman paint but can't find it anywhere. Is yours an old can or is it something you got recently? Couldn't find it at all on Google nor on Sears.com. Not even an image of the can. When/where did you get yours from?

Although hard to tell from your pic.......it does seem darker, i.e., more correct than the Ace I tried. You might be on to something.

Also, for Jim......I called Van Sickle and they don't sell their paint anywhere near my place.........but I remember seeing that label somewhere. Maybe Tractor Supply or Walmart, so I'll keep checking around.....I know I've seen it locally somewhere. Sucks getting old.

thanks,
bob

Jim, my guess is the center bar clamp and it’s components are repainted and the rest are original even though the shades are different.

Jim, lighting and condition (age) of each item sure makes a difference in photos, doesn’t it?

I believe it’s very difficult to determine shade of paint by a picture alone.

Radio,

You may have a rare can of spray paint there. I checked craftsman.com, kmart.com, sears.com, ebay, amazon, google and bing. There's no such animal. All I found was a press release from Sears dated 2016 saying they were selling a new line of Direct to Metal Craftsman paints. That's it. Is that weird or what? Next time you're near that can of paint let me know the SKU or PN on the can.......maybe I can find it that way.

thanks,
bob

You both pretty well hit it. All the pieces of the clamp for the flat shank were repainted with Van Sickle 460 the same time the vegetable cultivator was done. If you number them from left to right (as placed in the outside picture):

1) repainted square nut for the clamp,
2) NOS plow moldboard,
3) repainted u-bolt for the clamp,
4) NOS support spring rod for a blade,
5) u-bolt cap for the clamp,
6) NOS clamp for round shank,
7) block for the clamp.

The square piece of scrap is Rust-Oleum Royal Blue. The main cultivator frame is Van Sickle 460. I got my Van Sickle paint from Ken Updike when he was at C&G. You can see from the three pictures that any individual picture doesn't reveal much about the color. These look considerably different depending on the lighting. Looking at them in person (and ignoring the Rust-Oleum), the one that seems most different is #4, the blade part. At least the round part of it seems to have a different quality to it. It almost looks like a colored varnish. It may be relevant that the part is normally red and the blue color would have only been when the blade first came out right after WWII.

Hi Guys,

I took the cap from my can of Ace IH Blue with me to Walmart a couple of hours ago just to compare it to whatever they had on hand that might be close. I ended up buying a can of Rustoleum American Accents paint & primer Gloss Navy Blue. Going by the caps this Rustoleum is just a bit darker with a hint more purple than the Ace, and significantly different than the regular Rustoleum Royal Blue. Comparing the cap to my depth control's original paint......it looks like a perfect match. But that's just the cap color....so tomorrow, if it ever stops raining, I'll paint something and get a better look at it. Don't know if this Rustoleum is durable or junk, but right now I just want to nail the color.

Regards,
Bob
