Starving for gas?

Postby john2189 » Sun May 06, 2018 2:43 pm

Was mowing grass and started to loose power, opened gas cap didn’t make any difference, pulled choke halfway out and it ranok enough to finish mowing. Should the sediment bowl be full of gas? It looks full, but if I shake the tractor i can see it is not full of gas. Was too warm to take bowl off to see if screen was plugged will do that tomorrow.

Check the entire fuel system for an obstruction. Fuel cap vent to manifold.

If you had to choke it I would think that it would be something carb related. Maybe try inspecting the main jet for blockages? coulda sucked something in.
I'm by far no pro when it comes to cubs but that's just my thought

When I got my Cub I battled the exact same issue. I eventually got sick of it and replaced the entire line and sediment bowl, soaked the carb in cleaner, rebuilt the carb and took it to a cubfest to get looked over and adjusted. I can't say for sure what my issue was, but doing all that handled the problem. It sounds like the same fuel flow issue I dealt with so I would start by going through the entire fuel system. Check the tank for any chunks of rust or crud that could be obstructing the flow as well. Good luck to you, as it can be a long and frustrating process.

:lost: I don't know what you mean here. It isn't a stupid question and It looks like Don gave a good answer.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I am also having a similar problem with my 1959 International Cub Lo-Boy. It starts fine and drives away but in a minute or two the engine starts stumbling like it is running out of gas. I haven't tried pulling the choke out to see if it affects the running. I just took it over to the shop and started to "clean out" everything. Unfortunately when I pulled the fuel bowl it had a lot of debris in it, but I had to tear apart the cork gasket to get the filter out. The filter screen cleaned up ok and I happened to have another gasket from another project tractor. I looked in my owner's manual and it says to clean out the filter in the carburetor. Thats a new one on me because it says to "unscrew the fuel line fitting and remove the elbow; clean the screen and replace it". In the picture in my book it shows the same carburetor as I have and I don't see any elbow. So, what are they talking about and how do I get to this screen out to clean it? :lost:

I think the cub gods made it happen to me for a reason. I went to drive my cub through a path on the woods and suddenly lost power and couldn’t figure out why. Choking it didn’t make a difference. Got back and parked my cub and hopped off and a leaf was sucked over top of my carb air inlet. I have a piece of cloth layered three times for an air filter until I can get a pipe.

MY POINT IS CHECK YOUR AIR INTAKE AND MAKE SURE AIR CAN GET THROUGH EASILY.
Grass may have clogged it up or something.
I hope this solves your problem.

All of This literally happened to me ten minutes ago.

The zenith carbs have an elbow at the fuel inlet with a built-in screen that can be cleaned. The IH carbs should have a small "disc" screen down inside the carb fuel inlet, which can be removed and cleaned. A PO could have removed it and left it out.

The screen in the sediment bowl was clean, I’ll look at the carb inlet elbow to see if it has a screen it is a zenith, I’m guessing original it’s a 72

Just unscrew the elbow...it should be attached to the end inside the carb. I have seen some that had been cut off the elbow. Steiner's sells them.
