trouble starting

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Sun Oct 23, 2005 10:19 pm

Missy (49 cub with magneto) has always been harder to start than my 48 cub. It required heavier choking and more cranking to start when cold. If I tried to restart it hot after mowing an hour or so, starting was very dificult requiring considerable cranking and choking before it would finally run. I have tried off an on to find the problem, but it was not serious, and by the time I mowed for an hour or two I never felt like fighting it too seriously. Today I decided to warm it up and check it out.

I had already cleaned and rebuilt carb, and put new points, condenser, and coil in magneto. so I mowed fence rows for about half an hour today and decided to do some serious trouble shooting. Turned engine with hand crank (same way I had tested it previously), very hot spark. Left tester on coil term and tried starter. intermittient spark. Listened closely and impulse was only trippping part of the time when turning with the starter ( it cranks pretty fast for 6 volt system, espsecially after the battery has been charging a while). Apparenlty the springs on the centrifical weights of the magneto impulse are weak, and were missing the trip cam part of the time at cranking speed. As a further test i put the mag from my 48 on Missy, and it started on the first revolution. Guess it's time to find some magneto parts.

John:

If you stock room is anything like mine, as you are diggin for them springs, I am sure you will find a lot of the stuff you put away in a safe place that you would know exactly where they are, so you can find em quickly when you need em, items :?

It is amazing what I find when I go hunting for stuff.....

Same here, Rudi. Very frustrating. There must be some advantage to getting old but I haven't figured out what it might be. Dan

Rudi,

My oldest son is older than you are... so trust me on this: It will get worse. :( A word to the wise... prepare early, get organized.

On the bright side... isn't it fun to see all the neat new things that mysteriously appear? Just like Christmas. :D
