Re: Got a sickle bar, have some questions
It turns out the forward bracket was bent but after a lot of twisting and hammering I finally got it back in shape and made a successful test fit. I was sweating it for a while but she's good to go now. Note the missing grease fitting in the photo. Fortunately it's only missing and not broken off.

Re: Got a sickle bar, refurbing
Despite the not so nice weather I've been making some progress. The pulley and shield are on the tractor, the pintle has been rebuilt, the grassboard is done except for the McCormick decal (in the mail), the driveshaft is half painted, the cutter bar has been stripped of paint, and the support plate mounted on the tractor. With any luck the driveshaft will be done this week but I'm going to make good and sure the paint's dry before I hang it.
Flash sure makes the blue look lighter than it is.

Sickle bar is looking great! I love mowing with mine, and I love that it’s mid-mount, so I’m not straining my neck to keep an eye on it! I’ve always made my own pitman sticks.
Did you go through the sickle bar itself? Sharp ledgers and sections? They sure are fun to mow with!

Re: Got a sickle bar, have some questions
Thanks. I have the cutter bar apart but haven't done much with it yet except to strip the paint off the knives. Everything is nice and sharp but it will never be used. It's going to be strictly for display with a protective screen over the cutter to keep people from sticking their fingers in there.

Would someone pass that information along so that I could replace my grass board with one more like the original? I vaguely remember there being a thread here on making a grass board but evidently I'm not capable of finding it.
Thanks, Larry

Re: Got a sickle bar, have some questions
The drive unit is finally hung on the Cub. Darn flash makes the blue look lighter in the photo. I stumbled on to a later belt shield so I went with that. The pulley was originally white (were they all?) so that's what I repainted it. 4.5" pulley so a B43 (Napa) belt fit fine.

Re: Got a sickle bar, have some questions
Thanks. Sure, a visit would be nice. With 3 shows plus the 4th coming up over the next few weeks it'll probably be late summer before the rest is ready to hang on the tractor. When shopping for a sickle make sure it's for a LoBoy, a regular Cub one won't fit.

Re: Got a sickle bar, have some questions
I finished up the grassboard this morning. I found an original grass rod on-line but had to make the reinforcement strap and the skid strap myself. I found the spring in a junk shop.

Whatever works! My grassboard spring is from a diesel injector from a truck.
Looks great by the way!

Whitch size of spring do you need for the grassboard? I don't have one on my board.
