Re: Cub caught on fire
Looks bad but if you got the fire out quickly it's probably salvagible with some replacement parts. Good Luck, you're at the right place to get the help to make an accessment and maybe repair it. There's several FORUM members in the MD/PA/NY/NJ area, you might post for some help and get a minifest together.

I would first, pull the hood/gas tank to be able to get a better look, then go from there. If the tank and other sheet metal isn't ruined then everything else may be repairable. Even if the hydraulics are toast you could always turn it into a hand lift. I've operated mine that way for 50 yrs.
Good luck

Re: Cub caught on fire
This is sad to see. My Farmall B suddenly started weeping fuel out of a tiny pinhole at a spot weld on the tank last week, soaking the bottom of the fuel tank, front fuel tank support, and clutch housing. I immediately drained the fuel and ordered a can of POR-15 fuel tank sealer. The sealer should be dry by this weekend and it will be ready to put back into service.

Re: Cub caught on fire
That pic brings back bad memories of how I almost lost my Jeep a long time ago. Underhood fire with flames about that high. Fortunately, I was in town, and a guy brought his waterhose over and we put it out, before the fire spread out from under the hood. Still had to replace about everything but the long block and manifolds. The engine was fine afterwards and never gave me a bit of trouble.

Re: Cub caught on fire
Well, there's problems, and then there's opportunities. "Look, Sweetie, I was gonna dismantle Grandpa's Cub and restore it, anyway. It'll be fine."
And, that's what I'd do. Take it apart. Clean and analyze each part. Soda blast. Paint. Replacement parts. Stickers. Bam!
I was doing a favor for a guy once, getting the '68 Harley, inherited from his Dad, back in running shape. Backfire. FIRE! Well, I rolled this burning motorcycle out of the garage and doused it with a garden hose, but, that's not the way to do it. I have fire extinguishers in the garage now, close at hand.

Re: Cub caught on fire
Yeah It will not be that bad. You can do it. Check out the
video of the 1976 Farmall 140 we brought back for a lady that her neighbor caught on fire and watched it burn. Didn't have to rebuild the engine, but replaced the hydraulic resivoir, hood and gas tank for good measure.....along with any other burnt parts and maintenance items.

A big Thank you to tractorguy140 for making and posting this video from my photo album in photobucket.

Re: Cub caught on fire
awesome vid!
one thing that saved my JD 790 one day after I caught a stump under the ground surface and threw the battery half way out shorting it out and catching grass in front of the radiator on fire... is DIRT. it stopped cold and threw me up on the hood. I didn't know about the battery and regained my seat n headed up the hill. the hood was arcing against the side covers, I saw smoke and flames. I stopped the tractor n went up front and ripped the ground cable off it, the post was melted enough it just came away from the battery. I threw dirt on it until I got it put out. when in an emergency anything can be used, a jacket, your own shirt, dirt, even dog food if its handy! Anything to smother the flames long enough for you to get the fire shut down.
Fire has struck me 5 times in my life, not counting motorcycles and tractors and vehicles. (never lost one yet, but damaged some considerably). My house when I was a child, burned the upstairs where my room was. My grandparents home burned to the ground. My Mothers home, a total loss, she was badly burned. My barn got hit by lightning a few years back, I put that one out with a fire extinguisher and a hose. I have no close neighbors, a good thing as I had just gotten out of the hot tub a bit before and ran out of the house with a fire extinguisher and slip on shoes n nothing else! ( I prefer fighting fire when fully clothed, jus saying ) many things were lost in that one, I did lose two motorcycles in that one, one in the fire and one later as a result of damage from the fire, drill press, air compressor, etc etc.. A wind came up when the wife was burning trash and cost me an outbuilding and everything in it a few years back. I have a healthy respect for fire. I have burned wood all of my life, never had a fire start as a result of that. Fire will not stop until it has nothing left to burn. it knows nothing but to consume and destroy. if you do not have fire extinguishers GET SOME. Keep one in the truck, the car, I mounted one on my sidecar bike. I have them in the house. it may not last but it may slow down the fire long enough for you to get a hose. I pray nobody ever has to deal with fire but it happens. Stay safe, stay vigilant where the possibility of fire is concerned.

Yep. We mounted a fire extinguisher on it when we re-did it.

Re: Cub caught on fire
My big concern, other than the seals and gaskets, would be how the heat affected the castings. Torque tube, bell housing and bolster seem like the would have been heated up pretty good. I'm not sure if the heat would damage the strength of them or not, perhaps someone more knowledgeable of metals can weigh in on that. Just another thing to consider.

Re: Cub caught on fire
I would guess that where the fire was, most of the heat would have gone out and/or up with little to no damage to the cast iron parts.
My main concern would be the wiring, gaskets, and sheet metal. Specifically the gas tank, and TC.
