Problems continue

Postby Brodalick » Thu Mar 22, 2018 10:07 am

Trying to install my governor when I realize the crankshaft pulley has been broken. Of course it is broken where the timing marks were. Is there any way to time this close without the timing marks

Yep, I'm going out in a few. I'll locate top dead center on my 47 and take a pic where the handcrank is positioned when installed. then I'll carefully remove it and tell you. Providing you have a handcrank and our cross pins are in the same spot  . My brain can't think of an easier way right now.

My handcrank pin is at 90 degrees with handle laying flat. With my rotor pointing at tdc and lining up my only crank notch. The upwards clockwise pull of the handcrank is right at 10 oclock when everything lines up. Sorry, all my accurite measuring devices are in storage.

Or pull #1 plug and use finger over hole method to know when #1 is coming up on compression. Screwdriver or something similar to place in plug hole. (Long enough to not disappear, of course) Rotate crank clockwise until Piston at highest point

After doing as tmays suggests, when the piston is at/near the top, you can add enough light lubricant like MMO through the spark plug hole, when the hole is full to the top of the threads, rock the crank slightly and watch for the liquid to rise and fall. Max height of the liquid in the spark plug hole is TDC. (Obviously, the valves have to seal to be able to do this.)

Crankshaft pulley has pieces broke right where the timing marks should be.

Look like the best you could do with this one, once you find TDC, is to use a Dremel or other tool to create a new timing mark on the front lip of the pulley.

Or paint a timing mark on the right side of the engine block and on pulley. This way you are not running around from the left side of the engine to the right, making sure the timing is spot on.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The keyway slot in the crankshaft for the pulley is at TDC for cylinders #1 and 4. It will take some effort to find and position the keyway slot.

Something else to be aware of when trying to locate TDC. The piston remains at the top of the stroke for about 15 degrees of the crankshaft rotation.

I located top dead center using the finger method over the number one spark plug hole. I also painted both teeth on The Idler gear red and the one tooth on the drive gear red once I marry those up it should be right correct?

I would think a pulley that broken would chew up the belt

I agree. I think your long term plan should be to replace the pulley.
