How do you maintain it? Got it for a reasonable price. I'm thinking I'll eventually replace the blades. The middle blades are worn pretty good. I've never replaced blades before...is it difficult?

Go to the Quick Links tab at the top of this page and click on the Farmall Cub link - you'll see a link for Cub Attachments; the manual for the FH disc harrow is in that section in the Harrows file. The manual will give you maintenance info. I can't comment on replacing the blades but someone more knowledgeable than I will post the answer soon I'm sure.

Mine has tubes with grease fittings on them at each bearing. Make sure they are there and grease them. That is probably all there is to it besides making sure all the pins are in and correct and everything moves freely. I like oil the joints and pins now and then also.

If you need to replace blades, You have to take the arbor nut off, and this usually requires a hot wrench.--other than that once the nut is off, just slide shaft out and assemble in reverse order!-- Not hard once you get the nut off.--Be careful you dont break the shaft getting the nut off. thanks; sonny

Be prepared for sticker shock when you price new blades. It's going to cost you many times what you paid for the disc to replace them, and you really need to replace them all because it won't work well with some blades that are 2" bigger than the rest on a gang.

Do these disks take special blades or will any replacement blade work? I know that alot of IH brand disk harrows used a "flat center" type blade and those are near impossible to find in sizes used on Cub and Super A equipment.

Hi,
Below is the Cub L-38 Disc owner's manual, it has lots of info about the disc. :)

Ok, so here is a picture of the disk. It does need a little TLC but is functional. The first project was to adjust the level of the gangs. If you notice, the left side has a threaded piece with two nuts on. However, the right side looks different; there is only one nut. Do you think this looks like a modification? When I look at the operator manual, it looks like the rod is adjustable for both gangs (Item A). So, my quick question is this: Can I get that part replaced? If so, where are you getting parts for these old implements? Sorry, if I seem uneducated, I am not mechanically inclined so things like this are an experience for me.

Thanks.

Hi,
Both the rods are originally the same, I think, and both have 2 nuts each. If the rods are still good, you can put another nut on the rod it has, unless the rod has been changed so another nut won't fit. It is a little hard to see it in your pic.
The nut might need heating with a torch to get it loose.
You can try penetrating oil first, and let it soak. Clean up the threads with a die, if they need it.

The rods might still be available at a Case IH dealer, I don't know if they are. You can call them on the phone and ask. :)

The rod should have 2 thin jam nuts, it would still work with one. Tim ( tst ) here the forums may make new replacement rods for these disks. Your disk blades should work okay, they are not completely worn out.

If the adjustment rod is not available a machine shop can make one for you from a stock cold roll rod of the correct diameter. They can thread it and put the correct bends as needed. Measure the one that is correct or remove it and take it with you to use as a pattern.

McMaster Carr should have the rod (anchor bolt) available.
