I vote coil. I fought with the same symptoms you had, getting good spark after everything was cleaned and timed. Always seemed like it just needed one more good crank to start it but never did. I finally broke down and replaced the coil and it started right away. I second what John said, the no-start when hot sounds typical of an ad coil.

RE: timing the ROTOR AND PINION gear per Rick Spivey's post, if these two components are not timed properly it will not start.

Try another distributor cap, yours may be arcing or corroded. Be sure you have solid core spark plug wires,

Hi,
You could look at the points and see how they are. If they haven't been filed or replaced in a long time, they probably need service.
I take them out and file them with a large flat file. The point surfaces should be flat and shiny. Wipe off all filings with a clean rag.

:tractor: Well, finally got her running! Used the popsicle stick to find TDC and that did the trick. Must have just been slightly off before
