First, let me say that anyone at a cubfest I've been to will tell you I am a bit OCD when it comes to strapping things down!!

I have accepted that chains are probably better than straps, but I also feel that FOR ME straps are easier to handle & store, so I use the 2" straps & buy them when they go on sale. As soon as I see any wear, they get replaced.

I avoid wear by using carpet pieces or sections of old fire hose ANYWHERE the straps contact ANYTHING (trailer, implements, other straps).

I also have sections of chain (about 1' long) with hooks on one end that I use at each end of the straps. These can go over the metal edges of the trailer or hook onto tie down points so the strap doesn't have to...again avoiding any potential chafe points.

Finally, I use axle straps. These have sleeves over them that stay in place, while the strap itself can make those fine rubbing motions without messing up the paint. They have D-rings to which I can hook either my tiedown straps OR my short chain sections...a better more secure hook.
I have 2 different lengths: long ones for putting through the rear rims and shorter ones for the front axle. Similar to these:

I'm pretty much like dale, I put a 36" axle strap through each rear rim and a 24" axle strap around each side of the front axle close to the spindles. I then run my rear ratchet strap to a D ring just behind the front tire and the front ratchet strap to a D ring just in front of the rear tire (a mid-mount implement may change this). With 64 recessed D rings embedded in the floor of my trailer plus the side rails, I am never lacking for a tie down point.

When I tie things down, I think hard about what happens in case there is an accident or if I have to slam hard on the brakes. I don't want to get hit in the back of the head by something coming off the trailer.

And I use good quality ratchet straps with axle straps at the vehicle side and either direct to the d-rings on the sides of the trailer or to short extension chains (with hooks and loops) in the stake pockets. Used to use chains, but straps are less hassle and are fine for anything up to 5000 or 6000 pounds.
