Trouble shooting the Touch Control

Im getting the cub back up and running again so that I can use it in my garden. When it used to run the touch control worked fine, but its been sitting a few years and now when i move the lever it only moves like an inch. What would be a good game plan for working through this? Im not quite sure where to begin. Does it have its own oil bank? I guess the oil could be low.

Check the fluid level.

No, do NOT use motor oil. It should be filled with IH Hy-Tran hydraulic fluid or any other brand of hydraulic oil that is identified on the container as Hy-Tran compatible. Most farm supply stores have oil that fits this description. Thay also have cheaper oil that is not labeled this way. Avoid the cheap stuff.

Hi,
The Touch Control has to have enough fluid in it to work.
Below are pages from the 1955 Cub operator's manual telling about the Touch Control system, and the pics show where the fill and drain plugs are.
The fill plug is on the left side of the unit.
The drain plug is on the right side of the unit.
If you are draining the fluid, remove the filler plug first, to let any pressure out of the system.
The 3rd page tells how to change the fluid, and remove the air from the system. Be sure to do what it says in paragraph 4, to remove the air. The arms should go through their full travel 10 - 12 times.
Fill it the last time with the arms in the rear or down position, like the manual says.
If you fill it with the arms ahead, it will be overfilled.

Nowadays they make Case IH Hy-Tran fluid for the Touch Control. It is sold at Case IH dealers.
There are other brands, look on the package and be sure it works with IH systems before buying it.

So what fixed it?

Good that the Touch Control works.
Watch the engine oil level on the dipstick, before, and after running the engine for some time.
The pump is run by the engine timing gears. It is sort of common for the pump seal o ring, on the pump shaft to leak the Touch Control fluid into the engine oil. Then the oil level will rise on the dipstick.
If it does that, the pump needs a new o ring on the shaft.
I don't know what year your Cub is, the earlier pumps had a different seal on the shaft.
TM Tractor Parts has a new o ring, and a pump repair kit.
Below is a pic from them of the pump and the drive gear, so you can see what it is.
