Valve Train Noise & Smoke

Good morning! Been a while, but I know where to go when I run into something I can't deal with.

Short version..........working on a Cub that a tree limb fell on a broke the exhaust stack off at the manifold. The manifold was left open to weather for a few months. Pulled the head off and the valves were a mess. Removed valves, cleaned everything up, lapped valves, re-assembled. Also new condenser, points, rotor button and cap.

Starts and runs fine except I hear some noise in the valve train. Sort of a whiny sound. She's smokin like the devil out of the oil fill tube. I've done several valve jobs and never had an issue until now.

The tractor always did smoke out the oil tube, but not this much. I only use the tractor to spread manure and light chores. I plan to get it home this fall and do a proper rebuild. Just want to get it through the planting season.

Do you all think it's safe to run? Thanks to all as always!

Did you change the oil and filter after the water intrusion?

smoke out of the oil tube , more likely worn/stuck piston rings, valves will not make it smoke unless guides are super worn out

Hydraulics on tractor? Check hydraulic fluid level.

Lubricate the fan.

Hi,
They say on here if the engine is smoking, to put Seafoam oil additive in the engine oil.
They sell it at auto parts stores.
Piston rings commonly get stuck, and then the engine can smoke.
It could help the compression, if the rings are stuck, and the Seafoam loosens them.

Make the engine work doing something when using the additive, so it warms up.
I have read on here of people having good results after using the oil additive.
One of the experts on here said to use the additive for 2 oil change periods.
The 1949 Cub operator's manual says to change the oil every 120 hours of use.
If the piston rings are wornout, the seafoam won't help much.
I have used Rislone, and had good results with that brand, it is an oil additive also.
I haven't used the Seafoam, but have read people's posts about it on here.

Below is some info about what Eugene said above.
If you hear a whining sound, it could be the Touch Control pump, which is on the engine, below the valve area.
Below is a page from the 1950 Cub owner's manual telling how to check or change the Touch Control fluid. It should be checked with the arms in the rear or down position.

I use a clean pump oil can to put new motor oil in the hub.
