Ebay carburetor..pics

Postby Tractorboy3 » Sat May 18, 2019 10:04 pm

Hey guys...bought a carburetor off E-bay...$34.59 shipped..looked pretty nice on first inspection.
Then I discovered that the fuel inlet doesn't have the tapered / beveled seat for the compression fitting... the threads end at a flat surface, and the inlet hole is too small to let the fuel line slide in...try and see this in the attached pics..now I know why this was so cheap...
any suggestions....
thanks
Tom

It can be drilled out to work. Dissassemble the carb and remove the needle seat and drill with a bit just big enough for the end of the steel fuel line. That worked fine on the carb I bought that had the same issue

If they messed up on that what are the chances the rest is 100% correct? I'd send it back "Not as advertised".

Are the threads the correct threads or is it similar to a replacement sediment bowl that has pipe threads and comes with an adapter to hook up to the gas line?

Wow...you got the same one. So you drilled it to fit the steel line, did you try to bevel the edge at all. Or did you just crank down on the fitting. Does your leak at all??..Thanks for the response

Threads are the correct threads...1/4-20...NOT pipe threads...

For $35...would like to see if it can be made to work...Seems like everything I buy for my 67 Chevelle does not " bolt -on" without some kind of modification/adjustment....

Gas inlet threads are 1/2-20, not 1/4" NPT, just to clarify. A steel line should have an od of 5/16", the hole beyond that should be .266 (# H drill bit). I also don't like how deeply the filter screen is placed, although I'm not sure I even see the screen in your photos.

Typo....so used to 1/4-20....I meant 1/2-20..oops... and you do not see the screen...will not fit in that hole as it is

I am measuring about .310 on an old original carb. .290 on this new one...so I am thinking to open the hole to .3125 to let the 5/16 fuel line slide in just a bit??? still will not have a beveled seat ...unless I try to create a small one

A tapered stone/carbide burr of the right size in a Dremel might work for the bevel unless it left too rough a surface. Or a slightly larger drill bit if you could get it centered and aligned correctly.

Edit: Do you have a flattening jig that you could use to mount the top in a vise on a drill press?

The one I got off amazon was the same way. Because it was so cheap I decided to try and modify it. It had the correct threads but needed to be drilled to fit the line and inlet screen. I clamped it under my drill press and chose bits based on what fit in the hole on a factory carb. I enlarged the hole just enough to fit the gas line and have room for the inlet screen. I installed and had no leaks the tractor ran perfectly. I also found the choke shaft was slightly smaller than an original carb and to wrap a small shim around the shaft to get the choke lever to tighten

I did bevel the edge very slightly using a larger drill bit and twisting it by hand. Be very gentle drilling as the bits want to grab in the soft metal of the carb

I wonder if you could find a brass adapter that would have male threads on one end and a compression fitting in the other. If the male threads will go into the carb, worst case you can epoxy it in place and you release the line from the carb by the compression fitting. Only downside I see is that you might have to cut the end of your current gas line, or replace with a new one. It might be worth checking the hardware store before drilling it out
