49 Unusual Steering arm lock bolt

Postby rcupka » Sun Feb 18, 2018 9:17 pm

I noticed that I had a lot of play on my right steering arm when I drove my Cub last. The left tire was tight and responsive but the right visibly has a lot of play. When I was going through the TM Tractor web site I noticed they had three different style so I decided to look to see which I had.

I had noticed mine looked different. Instead of a hex head bolt, both of my lock bolts look like cap screws. The are serrated round heads with internal hex holes for a hex wrench.

I have never seen these before, fortunately I removed and cleaned up the right one and when torqued down completely the arm is now tight.

Was this an optional bolt, or maybe from a different year? If I did not describe this sufficiently I can take a picture tomorrow.

Thanks guys,

May be something a previous owner used.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

As you probably noticed from the TM pictures, the ends should be tapered to fit into a matching hole in the shaft. If your's don't have that, they might not stay tight very long.

Yes, They have the taper at the end, that is why I was confused. I will take a picture tomorrow

This is a picture I was able to find that shows the shape of the link bolt head. It appears to be coarse thread and when removed has the tapered end that fits in the tapered hole in the shaft.

Someone may have made replacements. I had to make a replacement for one of mine because the tip had a dog leg when I got the tractor. I believe it was probably loose in there.

I think Earl may have made those long ago.

Who is Earl?

This particular tractor was owned by a Ukranian from Troy MI who bought it from an old Polish Guy from Troy MI. Now it belongs to an old Czech (Me) from Saline, MI

On the serious side I did notice the treads look like they may have nicked a grinding wheel so they may be homemade. I looked in the three Cub books I have bought and none of them show a Cap Screw design like this.

Earl Fauble is a retired machinist in Ohio that has made lots of jigs and parts for Cubs; gas cap straightening jig, front pulley removal jig, dot head implement bolts, etc.

Hi,
The Cubs had either the square head, or hex head set screws for the steering arms, as far as I know. That is all TM Tractor sells.
I think by 1949 they had the hex head ones, but I'm not totally sure.
You can buy new setscrews, or leave it like it is. :)
