Remove the fan oil screw that is located on the fan hub (see below photo). Photo from a 1948 Cub.

When the screw is in the position seen above remove the screw and fill the hubwith oil until it just starts to run out the screw hole. Then rotate the fan with the screw still out so the hole points down. Excess oil will run out. When it stops running out it is at the proper level. Rotate the fan so the hole is on the right again and install the screw, there should be a gasket on the screw. Your oil is now at its proper level.

Some of them have a sealed bearing and do not have an oil hole.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

AC,

Good you asked ( I put the wrong oil in mine before I looked it up).

90 wt gear oil.

There is some good links at the top of the page under "cub info" that has specs and operator's manuals (that have a section called " lubrication guide" for all the required oil specs.)

I believe you were looking at the oil for the "Belt Pulley Housing", which refers to the 90º belt pulley that mounts at the PTO. The engine cooling fan hub takes engine oil as stated in the operator's manual. You might want to flush that 90wt out of there.

Definitely not 90w. 10w30 will be fine as Urbish suggested.

Barnyard & Urbish,

So I'm now wondering why I do anything without checking first. Thanks for the heads up.

John, sometimes I think it is just the wording that confuses us.

Well the cub operator's manual is not as bad as some computer program manuals I use. Those don't make sense unless you already know the answer to the question you have.

I'd be lost without this forum

Hi,
Here is a page from the Cub owner's manual showing how to oil the fan hub, and showing how the hub looks inside. The info is on the right side of the page. :)

I worked on a cub for an older gentleman a few years ago, and everything from the fan on back was solid black from old oil and dirt accumulating on it. After I went over it with the pressure washer it looked like a different rig. When I asked, he had been oiling the fan, but did not have a manual and did not know to drain the excess oil from the fan hub. I explained the procedure to him and made him a copy of my owners manual.

I'm working on my 67 Cub Lo Boy today. I was looking for that screw but couldn't find it anywhere. It's possible I don't have one right?
