1952 Cub Charging System
My 52 Cub has a 3-brush generator, voltage regulator, 3-position light switch, a new battery, and new wiring. I have double checked the wiring and it is correct. The generator has been bench tested and passed. This tractor will not charge the battery. I know that the generator does not match the voltage regulator and switch. If I ground the generator field, it pegs the ammeter. What can I do to make this system work? I was thinking of adding a toggle switch to ground the field to cherge the battery when needed.

From your description of the charging problem - - replace the voltage regulator with the proper one, one that matches your generator.Baxter28 wrote:I know that the generator does not match the voltage regulator and switch. Your service manual has a listing of 6 volt generators and 6 volt voltage regulators with their IH part numbers.
Is this still a 6 volt electrical system or has the tractor been converted to 12 volts?
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: 1952 Cub Charging System
As Eugene said, your problem is voltage regulator related. It could be a bad ground. Try a jumper from the regulator frame to a good ground.

Re: 1952 Cub Charging System
It is still a 6 volt system. I have run a ground wire from a regulator mounting screw to a good ground on the motor. I addition I used tooth washers for good contact.
Are you talking about using a cut out relay in place of the regulator?

No, I mean from the actual frame of the regulator, not depending on the original ground connection from the regulator to the mounting brackets. This is also what the flow chart means in step two.

You stated that the regulator was a mismatch for the generator.
Write down the numbers from the generator. Auto parts store should be able to find a suitable regulator. In a catalog, regulators are first listed by voltage, then the generator numbers that match the regulator. Also will be listed will be some vehicle or machine applications.
Or, from your service manual, the DR generator number, next page, 3 DR numbers for voltage regulators.
Firms offering tractor parts on the internet have listings for voltage regulators.

Re: 1952 Cub Charging System
You might be better off calling on Clover systems in California. They make solid state regulators which can be put right inside your voltage regulator case and then can still have the original wire connections and appearance. I have found that both the US and overseas regulators are not of reliable quality anymore. I have two 6V positive ground Cubs with similar solid state regulators and love them. I like to try to keep my tractors as close to stock as possible, but swear by solid state regulators and electronic ignition modules. Just my humble opinion.

Re: 1952 Cub Charging System
I agree with Steve. The VR is the weakest link in the 6 volt system and solid-state is the way to go. I have two VR from Clover.

Re: 1952 Cub Charging System
Why do you think the regulator is the wrong one? The generators that came on tractors with regulators were also 3 brush, however the 3rd brush was not adjustable as was the ones with a cutout.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!
