Snow Thrower Attachment

Postby edemco » Fri Dec 02, 2016 2:08 pm

Hi,
I think I have an old snow thrower for a Cub International. It's been setting around for a while and I was thinking about putting on the front of my Durango ... unless I can find another use for it.

Is it what I think it is?

Is there any information about how it hooked up to the tractor?

From the white paintand International rather than Farmall, I would suspect it was originally for a numbered series (154,184, 185), though with some work it could probably be made to work. The one for the standard cub had a driveshaft running all the way to the drawbar, and a Wisconsin engine mounted there to power it. I think it was an aftermarket approved by IH, but not sure on that part.

you are part of the problem!!!

The one pictured is not an OEM Cub unit. This one belongs to a friend of mine from Galien, MI. He took it to the Cub-a-rama a few years ago. This blower assembly is a 100% homemade unit.

What's the width on that IH snowthrower?

If it's 42" it's for the Cub Cadet. The Cub LoBoy version is 54" wide if I'm not mistaken.

To mount either on a Cub, it would have to be powered with a separate engine like the one pictured above. Completely custom setup. The only way a Cub has enough power to run one of these is at wide open, and at wide open it's too fast to blow anything more than a couple inches of fluffy snow.

That is a Danco Model 50 60" snowthrower. It fits a numbered loboy.
Here's a few pictures.

Better put more than 12HP on it. It eats all the power a 184 can produce and MUST run wide open. A few more RPM's would have been good as it usually just puked the snow one track width over. Was best in 4" to 6" of snow. Not as good with less or more.

Thanks to Don McCombs who helped me find this original post (I posted again by mistake thinking nobody cared ... just kidding).

Thanks for all of the great information!
Does anyone think it might work on a 230? Could it be PTO powered with a similar drive shaft to the one shown above? Or, could it be connected to the PTO and be used by backing the tractor?

I'm open to any ideas as to how I could use this blower. I've given up on the Durango idea.

I think the issue is ground speed vs available engine power. I would run an auxiliary engine wide open to power the blower, freeing you up to choose whatever gear and engine speed you need.

This beast requires a creeper. If powered by the PTO, the engine must be running wide open. First or second gear with the creeper engaged feeds all the snow it can swallow. If powered by an auxiliary engine, idling in first might be slow enough.

PTO direction on the IH 50 snowthrower is counterclockwise matching the Cub. Correct me if I'm wrong. The 230 may be standard PTO in clockwise direction and 540 RPM. The Cub PTO is at engine RPM.

I have all the parts gathered to use my IH 50 snowthrower on my Farmall Cub using a Wisconsin THD engine with a PTO clutch. My summer project for 2017. Yes 2 stage blowers are better, but I have this one so I'll make it work.

It won't work well on a 230 either. A 230 is much too fast in 1st or reverse to run the snowblower in much more than a couple inches of fluffy snow, plus it lacks a live PTO so the snowblower will stop every time you push the clutch pedal.

For best results the tractor needs to move along at a slow shuffle while the snowblower runs at wide open.
